ost people put their online-dating activities on hold during the holidays. But the truth is, when fall turns into winter, you’ll find a wonderland for online dating success.

Don’t believe me? Here are four reasons you should step up your online dating

efforts even as the year wanes.

Enjoy improved odds
“The key to being really good at finding dates on the singles scene is to participate in pools where you have the least amount of competition,” says Andrew Feinstein, author of Opening Lines, Pinky Probes and L-Bombs: The Girls & Sports Dating and Relationship Playbook. “Most people assume that winter is not a good dating time so they take a break. But those of us who put the dating charm on during the holidays have less competition.”

Tip: Update your online profile by posting a new photo of you decked out in holiday gear. And while you’re at it, update your interests and “about me” section, too, to highlight cold-weather activities you enjoy, whether you need a holiday shopping buddy, and so forth.

Boost that ego
“By stepping up your online dating activity over the holidays, you will receive an ego boost benefit simply by having options,” counsels dating coach Liz Kelly, author of Smart Man Hunting. “While you might go to holiday parties alone and wish you had a partner with you, it will make you feel better to get home and see that five guys have asked you out online. This confidence surge will help you naturally attract dates anytime, anywhere over the

Tip: Since confidence is so very sexy, get your friends to help you build yours before you go out. Ask them to tell you what they think your three best qualities are. This not only turbo-charges your self-esteem, but it helps you know what to focus on with your dates.

Get your feet wet
“Because Internet dating memberships surge in January when everyone makes resolutions to find new love, your timing is perfect if you pump up the volume in December,” Kelly says. “Going on lots of dates during the holidays will give you practice for connecting with someone more serious about relationships in the New Year.”

Tip: This is especially good if you’ve been out of the dating scene for a while. Pick one thing you want to work on for each date, like your conversational skills or body language. This will make each date an opportunity to learn—if not to love.

Nab a holiday party date
“I hate going solo to parties, so last year I decided to find a fun party date online,” says Shanda Roy of Washington, D.C. “I met several guys for coffee and picked the most fun one to invite to a holiday bash. I figured if it didn’t work out, at least there would be other fun people to talk to.” Instead, they hit it off and her friends got to rate him on the spot—and they approved. “We’ve been dating ever since!”

Tip: Look for someone who’s naturally outgoing and entertaining, not someone who will cling to you at the party.

So what are you waiting for? Don’t just shop for gifts online this holiday season. Do a little shopping for love while you’re at it.
