ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

"The scientist does not study nature because it is useful; he studies it because he delights in it, and he delights in it because it is beautiful. If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, and if nature were not worth knowing, life would not be worth living." - Henri Poincaré.

This quote has greatly influenced the intensity with which I pursue my work as a scientist, my art as a culinary experimentalist, and my life as a transient being on this planet.

When I am not in the lab, I like to cook and try new restaurants. My close friend and I work to perfect new dishes, and seek out inspirations from the greatest chefs in the Northeast. We have adopted many Modernist Cuisine techniques, and give new meaning to the phrase food adventure.

My little sister was born with a learning disability. It wasn't until I was 8 that I realized that my sister and I were different. Ever since that day I have been fascinated with the brain. I trained initially with speech pathologists to work with her on phonics and reading. I later began working in a lab using MRI to develop new therapies for stroke victims. My interest in the brain continued to grow in my attempt to understand how this lump of cells we cal the brain makes me, me; makes you, you; and makes my sister, the most wonderful, happiest, and most lovable person I know.

Throughout undergrad I studied the development of the nervous system and gained an understanding and appreciation for the intersection of physics and biology. I am currently working on my Ph.D. in neuroscience at Harvard. My research is centered around discovering the means by which cells in the ear convert mechanical motions from sound waves into electrical signals that the brain can understand.

I find great pleasure in pushing the boundaries of human knowledge, but I also very much enjoy sharing scientific knowledge and practices with people who lack access to such things.

In this vein I run a high school outreach program, with some close friends, which aims to provide underserved students with a foundation in science, and a sense of self efficacy so that they can pursue careers in science and medicine.
