ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

I have a lot of interests, and I'm curious about pretty much everything. So I'm always keen to listen and learn. I think humor is important, as is a certain degree of gravity, when it's called for. I guess I'm most interested in people who are a blend of a lot of different things. For a host of activities: talking, walking, concerts, browsing through book stores (such that there still are book stores), sitting in the bleachers at Fenway. Pretty much anything that does not involve heights. I can't really envision myself with someone who breaks into acronym mode every other sentence--or at all--so if you must bust out the ROTFLs, I'm probably not the one for you.

I write for most magazines and newspapers (Atlantic, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Sports Illustrated, etc.), on a range of subjects (books, film, music--rock, jazz, classical--dance, architecture, art, history, sports), while publishing fiction, and I also contribute as a guest to NPR's Weekend Edition. My first two books came out in 2013, I recently sold my third, and I'm working on several novels, a Cape Cod volume, and a book about the Beatles at the moment.

I am no foodie, but I make a mean vat of gazpacho. So, ladies: play your cards right, and you can find yourself awash in a most hearty soup. Actually, I'm overselling it. I'm scared of sharp things so I don't cut the vegetables down as much as I should so it's probably not that hard to choke on my aforesaid gazpacho. So maybe just enjoy it with a chaperon.

I'd love to hear from you if you're open-minded, kind, curious, not overwhelmed with stress at the prospects of something so simple as grabbing a coffee. Spontaneous, verve-y people are encouraged as well. And if you have a nice voice. Not a singing voice. But a nice voice. I think you can tell a lot about a person--at the outset, anyway--by the quality of their voice. Just a pet theory of mine. Maybe I've known too many stentorian individuals. Could be.

A fondness for nature, sports, art, culture, ideas, growth, perspicacity, and the self-examined life wouldn't hurt either. I love to spend hours in marshes or Cape Ann woods, tramping about and seeing what I can find, externally and internally. I'm at the MFA usually a few times a week for various reasons, and sometimes for a quick break from my maddening hell of deadlines and book commitments, I bust over to the Aquarium for a quick stroll through the exhibits, although I usually get detained at the touching pool because, well, how addictive is that touching pool? And no, that's not a metaphor. Cheeky.

Quick little addendum because people are getting in touch and asking why I'm not smiling in the photos. I can't really smile on cue. And most of the photos I took myself, so, you know, kind of weird to be smiling back at yourself. Like, 'hey buddy, we'll see you later, because we're you.' It's interesting though: people seem to put am emphasis on smiling as some indication of happiness. And yet, almost every single photo I see on here as the main profile pic features someone smiling. And I know that we're not close to everyone on here being happy. But yes, I'm all giggly and smiley (although maybe like an amped-up Gargamel). Just not with my own camera in my face.

Favorite hot spots:

Concord, Rockport, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Cape Cod. I was born on a boat off of Cape Cod, and was then shipped to an orphanage in New Bedford, not far from where Melville lit out. So the sea is in my blood. Arr. Rockport is my favorite place on earth

All kinds of music--jazz, rock, classical, plus film, from the silent era on up. Love a bad eighties sitcom as well in the middle of the night. Sports, Islay whisky, Christmas, the ocean, New England autumn. Baseball, hockey. Bootlegs. Architecture.

Last read:

Always have a bunch of books going at once. Of late: Yeats' Autobiography, Delacroix's journal. Zola's The Masterpiece, Ellman's Joyce bio, a Three Investigator's mystery, Whisky Bible 2013, The History of Impressionism
