ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

I’m a very hard-working, motivated, and goal-oriented person. Career-wise, I'm a molecular biologist working on drug resistance in cancer. I’m extremely passionate about my work; not only do I absolutely love the challenge associated with understanding the inner workings of cells, I also want the fruits of my labor to provide real benefits to cancer patients. And while my work is important to me, family and friends always come first (I haven't gotten to the 'what I'm looking for in a partner' section yet, but it's important to state early on that your priorities should be similarly aligned).

All work and no play does indeed make Jack a dull boy, so play I do. I love the outdoors. Hunting and fishing, two of my favorite things to do, are cornerstones of my family’s traditions. I was in Boy Scouts growing up (Eagle Scout, and proud of it), and developed a love for hiking and camping that persists today. I’ve also recently taken up sailing and surfing, both of which have been a blast.

For non-outdoorsy fun I love to hang out with friends and family. I’ve got a couple of favorite dive bars in the city that are perfect for just hanging out with friends, having a few beers, shooting the breeze, and maybe throwing some darts. I enjoy playing cards, game nights, and watching admittedly terrible yet hilarious movies (Anchorman, Shaun of the Dead, Old School, to give you a sense). I also enjoy cooking, and fancy myself not half-bad.

Let’s see what else . . . I’m a Bay Area native, went to college in San Diego (go Tritons) then moved to San Francisco about 7.5 years ago to earn my PhD at UCSF (go ... I’m not sure we have a mascot...). I recently started as a postdoc at Genentech. I fancy myself to be pretty funny; I crack myself up anyhow, and hopefully you’ll be amused as well :). I’m pretty down to earth and easy going; not too sophisticated and that’s how I like it. A night at the symphony/theater is fine once in a while, but I’d generally prefer an afternoon in the sun with cold beer, ideally with a fishing pole in my hand.

Who I’m looking for: Someone who is hard working, ambitious, vibrant, and kind hearted above all. A good sense of humor is a must. I’m seeking a real partner; someone to share in all of life’s adventures and mishaps. Someone who is open to and interested in trying new things and knows how to have a good time. A love of the outdoors, or at least an openness to experiencing it, is also important. And while it’s great to make new friends, I’m looking for someone who’s open to the possibility of a real, serious relationship. I'm not asking that you be ready to jump in head first; we can just see where things go. But companionship does need to be something you value and are seeking.

If you’re interested after reading through all of that, send me an email and let’s meet up for drinks/coffee/hike/other. Meeting in person seems to me like the best way to see if we’re a 'match' rather than bouncing emails back and forth.

Update: My Match experiences to date have revealed that there are some additional things that I ought to cover from the outset in my profile. First, dealing with the stigma of being divorced, as it seems that gets viewed as an indicator of some deficiency in relationship potential - my ex-wife and I parted ways amicably after she discovered/accepted that she is homosexual. One of those things that happens that isn't anyone's fault, it just is what it is. Secondly, the fact that I hunt - don't take this to mean that I don't love animals, because I do. It's a complicated dichotomy to explain in a the space of a few sentences, but I'm always more than happy to discuss it.
