ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

Hi. I'm Mills. Thanks for visiting.

Some have told me I’m the nicest person they know, and others have said I’m the smartest one. I've heard this multiple times for both. However, the best compliment I got was when I was told that I'm unique.

The public figure most similar to me in personality is Michael Palin in his BBC travel shows (type in "Michael Palin" and "BBC" on YouTube). He was also in "Monty Python's Flying Circus," but I'm lukewarm on that. At first glance Palin is insatiably curious about the world, very friendly to all, a tad goofy, and a natural at building exceptional rapport with the most unusual people, such as toothless headhunters in Borneo, camel traders in the Sudan, witches in Brazil, Pakistani princes, or a Siberian helicopter crew. If you watch for a bit longer however, you see that he's also introspective, intellectual, handsome, and well-mannered. He is also the top result when you google "Britain's nicest person."

Before I was even 21, multiple fathers had told me they wanted me to marry their daughters even though I wasn't dating them. This was awkward to say the least.

I'm great with kids too, so much so that many of my future children's friends will likely say that I'm their favorite dad. Well, once they're teenagers, they will probably think I'm boring.

Adventure is good. Shortly after college, I moved to Portland, Oregon on a whim and got a white-collar job with Nike within two weeks. I later taught adults in Thailand and China after applying directly for the jobs over the Internet (no supporting program such as the Peace Corps). You learn a lot about yourself when surrounded by thousands of folks each day who don't look like you or understand your language.

I chose Thailand because I wanted to look at my Episcopalian upbringing from an outside perspective, and other than Christianity, Buddhism interested me the most. You never know if you love someone until you're away from them, and I knew this could be applied to analyzing my religious beliefs. I then chose China to learn more about Taoism and Confucianism.

I'm an ENFP for the Myers-Briggs fans, but most folks think I'm an introvert. I'm probably a better listener than most extroverts.

Dry humor is attractive, and not sarcasm, which is mean and cynical.

When I'm abroad, the locals there think I'm Canadian, which I appreciate.

For exercise, I like hot yoga (Baptiste method), the elliptical machine, the occasional spinning class, and meditation. I used to run, but I want to my knees to be fine in my 90s. Speaking of my later years, I would love to do qi gong then like the Chinese do each morning. I even have a couple of qi gong dvds already.

Though classy restaurants are fun, I also like those places where you walk in and you're the only one not of the ethnicity of the cuisine being served. My favorite dive is where I can get a lamb burrito with grilled cactus (real cactus!) while surrounded by only Mexican customers.

Regarding alcohol, I have a beer or glass of wine only once every 2-3 weeks or so. It's not a big part of my life, and I strive to get a buzz from life itself, but I'm not a teetotaler. Match didn't have a "rarely" option for this.

Please, no tattoos, and no Match "winks," "likes," or "favorites". I respond to every message, if only to say "Thanks but no thanks, and good luck."

If I had to list a couple of keywords that I haven't yet listed (so that I show up in keyword searches on Match), they would be reflective, soft-spoken, zen, and nonjudgmental.

Thanks for reading this, and I wish you good luck and resilience in your search. Online dating can feel impersonal at times.

One's companions make the place. For travel, I like comfort, but I also like meeting the locals on an as equal-status basis as possible and spending at least one night as a homestay. That said, I plan to go to Dominica (not the DR) later this year.

Being in silence together, whether it is while reading, writing, walking, or cooking. Couch traveling with Lonely Planet's "The Travel Book."

The last three I read were Michael Palin's "Brazil," his "Hemingway Adventure," and Huston Smith's autobiography, "Tales of Wonder: Adventures Chasing the Divine." My older favorites are "The Tao of Pooh," "Peace is Every Step," and "Sophie's World."
