ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

That headline is a paraphrase of a quote by, of all people, Julius Erving ( bonus points if you even know who that is ). The whole quote won't fit above, but it is...

"One of the most predictable things in life is there will be change.
You are better off if you can have a say in the change. But you are
ignorant or naive if you don't think there will be change, whether you
want it to or not." Julius Erving

Until the end of my marriage, that didn't mean as much to me. Now, I think, I understand better what he was talking about. So that is why I am here, to have some say in my change. I'm thirty-nine years old, so I probably won't be alone for the rest of my life... but living and working in the suburbs, and not being a barfly, means you don't run into a lot of people that you don't already know. Rather than depend on fate, or a car accident, or natural disaster to meet someone, I thought I'd try here.

Of course, that doesn't give you much to think about, so...

I am, in no particular order; an amateur metalworker, professional software guy, very amateur gardener... actually, just put 'amateur' in front of the rest of these... dog-trainer, racecar driver, golfer, woodworker, remodeler, kayaker, bicycle and auto mechanic, photographer, cyclist and caretaker of one ancient one-eyed dog and an even older cat. I listen to a crazy variety of music. I have never owned a video game console, am not on Facebook, and do not Tweet, so if your life revolves around any of those, we might not have much to talk about. I read the news more than I should (just depressing) and books less than I should. I've traveled extensively domestically -- although not yet seen the Grand Canyon -- but not nearly enough internationally. My favorite movie is Jaws, for reasons that have nothing to do with the shark, or even the plot. I hope you don't share all those interests and hobbies... I already know about them, so I hope you have a hundred other interests that you can hook me on. The world has an overwhelming array of options, it seems a waste to limit yourself to people who are just like yourself already.

I was born and raised in Upstate New York, but have been in and around Chicago for half my life now. I never had a New York accent, and haven't developed a Chicago one yet, so I think accents in general are very cool. I say 'Please' and 'Thank you', and it bothers me when people in my party are not nice to waitresses and the like. I think education is over-valued, and intelligence is under-valued, and too many people confuse the two. I think it is essential to have some good friends, but they are also in short supply.

Connecting with someone entirely via typed messages seems unlikely to me. That may have worked hundreds of years ago when penmanship was a fine art, but now, personalities don't seem to translate accurately to the written word. For example, I'm not nearly as stiff as I probably sound. I actually make people laugh often and am the goofball in some crowds. I wouldn't mind meeting someone, to see what happens in person. In the meantime, I threw in that landscape photo of mine... if you can't think of anything else to say, try to guess where that was taken. What I'm really looking for is someone who is sarcastic. It is so hard to find anyone on Match who claims to be sarcastic, though, so I guess that's the proverbial needle in the haystack.

Oh yeah, I wanted to mention... I'm fairly old-school, so I'll be opening doors, and you won't be seeing any dinner checks, but I am not that way about everything. For example, I won't be offended if you wink at me here or like, or even send a message first. I understand why you might not, but if you do, it's fine by me.

I would like to find one person with whom I can talk about anything, and also sit with in silence sometimes, for 40 to 50 years, give or take.

For fun:

"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." - Thoreau

Also, I like to put bacon treats next to my dogs' noses while they are sleeping, so they have awesome dreams of bacon.

Favorite hot spots:

It's not very 'hot', but my favorite spot these days is under a few beautiful trees in the park near my house. My dog and I stop there for a break on our walks, and lay in the grass, watching the clouds and enjoying the breeze.

Favorite things:

Clouds (cumulus, not so much nimbostratus ). The sound of crickets. Thunderstorms. My dog, and okay, my cat too. Ice and snow.

The fact that my 'About Me' above is exactly 4000 characters. ;) That's like wearing 37 pieces of flair.

Last read:

'The Art of Racing in the Rain', per recommendation here. Not a wise choice for someone facing the prospect of putting down his two best friends later this year. Read it in one sitting, and have been trying to forget it since.
