ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

I think we should take a moment here at the beginning to acknowledge that it’s no easy task writing a dating profile. There are so many ways it can go completely wrong: overselling, underselling, relying on too many cliches, revealing too much of your weirdness right upfront, sounding desperate for human contact, using ironic incorrectly, and so many more. Let’s give ourselves a pat on the back and a mutually-knowing look for taking this tremendous leap of faith together. I come across “Ugh, this is so hard!” at the beginning of so many profiles, and after the “That’s what she said!” joke passes through my head, I nod in agreement. Yet, here we are; with optimism and eagerness urging us onward. I’m with you in solidarity, intrepid internet daters. Let’s get through this together.

My favorite sorts of people are those who live in the margins of society. Not those weirdos who take extreme, inflexible positions on everything, but rather people who take a critical view of the world around them and dream up new possibilities. I get excited by creativity and novelty, new perspectives on traditional conventions. I tend to not be a risk taker in my own life, and settle too often into comfortable routines. That’s why I look to surround myself with interesting people who challenge me. I love working in special education for many reasons, but particularly because there’s nothing boring about it. The students are spectacular and fun, and everyday we surmount new obstacles. People say far too regularly that you have to possess incredible patience to work in special education. I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I think the most important characteristic of a good special education teacher is an unwillingness to accept circumstances as they currently exist. The world can always be better if you’re willing to work for it.

My family are the most important people in my life. My niece is my favorite person, and my newborn nephew is going to have a helluva time dislodging her from that prestigious position. I have two younger sisters; I used to lament not having a brother, but I think I turned out to be a better person because of my sisters. My mom and dad are my inspiration in love and life, and they’ve set a standard that I’m constantly striving to achieve.

I’ll speed this up in case you’re losing interest in my profile. Some quick facts about me:

I want to summit the highest point in every U.S. state, but thus far have done only two. I text in complete sentences without abbreviations, and I expect the same courtesy. If you want to keep a secret from me for three months, leave it on my voicemail. I will try any new food once, but if it’s seafood I’ll likely not go back for seconds. I’ve snowboarded only once, but I’m amazing at it and could be a professional if I wanted. I strongly dislike subjunctives, and disregard their usage whenever possible.

A few notes on the sort of woman in whom I’m interested:

I want someone who values her work, and is driven to further her career. I like independent women; those who want me, but don’t need me. She must be open and communicative about what she wants, and I will certainly return the favor. If she doesn’t proudly call herself a feminist, or at least understand what that word actually means, then we will probably have nothing to talk about. Most of all, I want someone who is happy in her own life, and is looking for a companion, rather than some sort of fulfillment or validation.

If you like what you've seen and read thus far, then please send a quick message. Extra points to those who are brave enough to ask for what they want, rather than wink and hope for the best. Good luck to you in your search!
