I value learning in all of its forms and I see myself as a person who searches for new experiences whether it be through traveling, reading, music concerts, a film or a conversation with somebody I meet. I have been very fortunate to have a family that is compassionate, understanding and strong and friends that have been and continue to be varied, interesting and accepting. Family and friends are reflected in the essence of who I am as a person today.
Some of the most fulfilling times I have had during the course of my life have been experienced while traveling. The landscapes, cultures and people I have encountered throughout the States, Canada and Spain have made me a more open and compassionate person. I am a student at heart. My travels have proven to be an influential and inspirational teacher. There’s not a day that passes where a lesson learned while travelling doesn’t appear someplace in my teaching.
Music provides me with incredible joy and some of the highest points of my life have been experienced at concerts. I’ve seen a wide variety of musicians from many different genres. I have been lucky enough to attended shows at venues such as Massey Hall, The Horseshoe Tavern, Shea’s Theater, the Chicago Theater, Madison Square Garden, the Bowery Ballroom and the Shepard’s Bush Theater. I am listening to Canadian bands such as Great Lake Swimmers, Stars and Land of Talk. Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Derek Trucks, Albert King, Sam Cooke, the Beatles and John Coltrane form much of the base of what I’m interested in musically. Some of the shows I have recently seen include: Sufjan Stevens, Ron Hawkins, Leonard Cohen, Stars and Metric, Great Lake Swimmers, the Heartless Bastards, Morrissey, Bob Dylan, Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket.
I enjoy films that would likely be shown at the Amherst Theater or North Park. I recently started reading a few articles from the Wall Street Journal on Sundays and often scan the headlines on Reuters for anything interesting to talk about at the start of a class. I have always loved books, bookstores and record stores. I love listening to NPR and try to listen to This American Life and interviews on Fresh Air when possible.
I exercise regularly as it helps to provide balance in my life. I am committed to a healthy lifestyle which includes cooking at home as much as possible. I have been practicing Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga for the past four years. Yoga is a great counter balance to workouts at the gym and a week of teaching high school students.
I am ready to build a life with a woman who shares values similar to mine. I believe that this is the foundation upon which to build a lasting and compassionate relationship. I have been fortunate enough to have led a full and varied life up to this point and have experienced times filled with both sorrow and joy. Through these experiences and time spent with friends and family, I have learned lessons that taught me the meaning of compassion and love. I want to share myself with an independent, self-assured and passionate woman. To learn and grow as a human being with a strong, loving and compassionate woman would be the essence of a joyous and meaningful life.
