Hello, Los Angeles! I am a PhD student in English Literature (well, Irish literature/Irish studies) at USC. Before that, I was a certified Special Education Teacher at a high school in Baltimore. I'm not from LA originally -- I moved here 4 and a half years ago for graduate school, and only now am I really getting accustomed to the culture and vibe here and finding my niche. Although I mostly know people from college and USC out here, I'm trying to meet new people and hopefully spark up something romantically.
About me: I was born in the Philadelphia area, but I grew up mostly in Augusta, GA - I moved there when I was 7 and lived there until I graduated high school. I went to Northwestern for undergrad, and Chicago far and wide remains my favorite city. Call me crazy, but I love winter and frigid weather. I Taught for America (TRADEMARK R!) in high school special education for two years after that in Baltimore in my starring role as the white teacher on HBO's "The Wire," and I was scratching and surviving (check the "Good Times" reference) in the ghetto teaching high school kids OLDER THAN ME (don't know how that happened) when I was 21. I came to LA in 2008 to start my research in Irish studies, and I love what I research. I'm sarcastic and occasionally stubborn. And I believe in most of the tenets of Marxist theory. I'm a liberal lefty, but I'm open-minded.
I love books (obviously) and music - I am probably one of the few people I know that still buys CDs. I listen to a lot of indie rock and go to a lot of concerts (probably a few times a month, at the Echo, the Satellite, the El Rey, or Alex's Bar in Long Beach). I'm thrifty (it's the way my parents raised me), but I never go thrifting (I hate hipsters). It'll be great, I assure you.
Basically, I'm looking for a girl to hang out with and (hopefully) something long-term. If you're nice, funny, have a good head on your shoulders, and like going to shows, movies, or just getting coffee, drinks or dinner somewhere, I think we would get along swimmingly. Speaking of swimmingly, if you can save me from drowning, that would be great too, because I can barely swim, and you could help me stay afloat. Obviously, I love laughing and hate being bored, and I also love being alive, so if you can make me laugh and keep me entertained, well, we have something in common already!
I'm looking for a real person so I can start a real relationship, so don't message me if you just want to talk to me or if you have some kind of dying relative that needs money or flowers. I'm not Manti Te'o. Even though he might be able to run 40 yards in less than 5 seconds (which is impressive), the difference between me and him is that I'm not gullible, and I don't make up people that don't exist. Also, and this is significant: if you fit either what I deem dwarf status or you're as tall as Andre the Giant, it's probably not going to work out, just for logistical reasons.
On second thought: if you've actually met someone that's 3'0" or 8'11", let me know, because that would be HILARIOUS. Pictures, please, because if you don't have pictures it didn't happen.
TL;DR: Name's Vasu; degree whoring in English, for some reason; has a random sense of humor; likes puns and a good non-sequitor. For a good time, message.
