ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

Most times when faced with a decision, I’ve chosen interesting over conventional, easy, or safe. It’s led me to entrepreneurial experiences and a few graduate degrees. It’s led me to bartend at a dive in London and at one of the best restaurants in New York. It’s led me to advise hedge fund managers on behalf of the top investment bank in the world. It’s led me to a marriage that didn’t work out despite best intentions. And now, after a decade in NYC, it’s led me to Pittsburgh.

What exactly led me to Pittsburgh? In a word, taxidermy. I woke up in New York one morning and was hit with the blinding realization that if I didn't learn how to stuff a raccoon now, it was probably never going to happen. I reached out to my network and was eventually connected with a quasi-celebrity taxidermist in McKees Rocks with whom I negotiated an apprenticeship. That one-way ticket is the best purchase I've ever made.

Just kidding. I'm here for a job that's entirely unrelated to taxidermy . . . so far.

I love this town for many reasons, most of which have to do with friends, food, art, and music. One respect in which I’m a bit different from the average Pittsburgher is my relative indifference to the local sports teams or sports in general. I was half decent at a sport back in the day (ranked #4 in the USA in my weight class), but honestly, I did it because it was a spectacular way for a 5’6” guy to curry the favor of above average girls, not because I was obsessed with sports. Of course, if a Pittsburgh team makes the playoffs, I’ll get in the spirit and cheer enthusiastically—so long as they’re not playing against Philadelphia—because while I’m not huge on sports, I could not be bigger on loyalty. I’ll respect your loyalties so long as you respect the Eagles and Flyers jerseys in my closet. Along those lines, if there’s a Penn State football game being played, I’m watching it if at all possible. Why? Because Columbia University doesn’t have much of a football team and Babson College doesn’t have a football team at all, and because I love Penn State dearly . . . even though I may have fit in better at Pitt.

My family is central to who I am. I’m extremely grateful to have the best parents I could have ever hoped for. They’re still married, which I admire greatly even though I’m not. They’re not perfect, but they’re exceedingly good, kind, and considerate people. I try to live in a way that makes them proud. I get together with them and my brothers every two months or so. While I don’t have any kids yet, I do have a dog that I definitely count as family. I love dogs and I won the animal shelter lottery with the one lying next to me on the couch right now. Cats, on the other hand, I’m spectacularly allergic to. If I fell in love with someone who had a cat, I would probably have to take weekly allergy shots for three years to have a chance of overcoming it. I’ve done worse for love, though.

What kind of people am I attracted to? Those who’ve been graced with high levels of empathy. I’m convinced that this trait is largely genetic. You can strengthen whatever level of empathy that you’re born with, but no amount of meditation is going to turn a person near the autistic spectrum into someone who intuitively understands the dynamics of human emotion. If being moved by the joy and pain of others comes naturally to you, we'll probably get along well.
