Reformed Canadian. Refugee from NYU. Lover of all things Los Angeles. (Except for the La Brea tar pits. Seriously, what evil Machiavellian genius figured out to make a tourist attraction out of a giant puddle of black goo?) Spontaneous road-trip aficionado. Voracious hunter of film, theater, art, books, music, etc.
I run my own film production company, which basically means working meeting with writers, developing their scripts, helping them meet studio deadlines, begging them to meet studio deadlines, coming up with elaborate threats so they’ll meet studio deadlines, helping my more "free spirited" writers gain control over their peyote dependency, etc.
Beyond that, I’m really into exploring new experiences. In the last couple of years, I’ve tried to take the attitude of a “Year of Yes” – saying yes to anything I’m invited to, within reason. As you might imagine, sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but it’s almost always interesting. (Note: my “Year Of Yes” resolution does not extend to bungee jumping, indie movies about disillusioned young men moving back to their hometowns, or anything involving Burning Man. A man must have his limits.)
Really big fan of exploring LA, taking wrong turns and discovering somewhere totally obscure and incredible. Getting lost, but in a good way. Finding amazing restaurants, random little shops and the parts of LA where its history pops up.
Big fan of museums & galleries (Gallery1988 is awesome) Just saw the Caravaggio exhibit at LACMA and extremely excited about seeing the Kubrick one soon. Love going to concerts (The Troubadour is pretty amazing for those), especially if it's an off-beat, intimate venue. And try to see as many movies as I can - whether it's at the Hollywood Forever screenings, New Beverly Cinema/Cinefamily, or just the latest over-the-top action'explosion'extravaganza.
Things that I love... Hmm.
Music: I love Kanye West, because I think pop music can use all the crazy, volatile “fuck-the-world-I’m-doing-it-my-way” types it can get. I also have a huge soft spot for Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones.
Books: If you are not reading something by Junot Diaz, Dennis Lehane, or Max Brooks, stop performing CPR on that person and go pick one up. If you are reading any of this stuff (or have recently read something awesome you want to tell me about), we have lots to discuss.
Movies: I have a piece of “Bottle Rocket”-themed artwork hanging on the wall of my living room, which should say a lot about my feelings toward that director and his movies. I am not ashamed to admit that I still get weepy during “Good Will Hunting” (ok, slightly ashamed); if “Die Hard” is on TV, I’m watching it through to the ending, even if my couch is on fire.
TV: I like getting anxiety attacks from “Breaking Bad” and “Homeland” and getting into spirited debates defending th excellence of “Girls.”
Food: I hereby pledge my allegiance to any place that does a really, really good burger. Also Sushi Ike (hole-in-the-wall sushi joint in Hollywood but completely, totally incredible) and El Carmen on West 3rd (best Mexican food & Margaritas I know of.)
The person I'm looking for is... funny and driven and excited by the possibilities of life in this city.
