I have pulled off most everything I have imagined doing, and a few extras, multiple careers, adoptive single parenthood, living abroad, advanced study. Looking for good conversation, sense of adventure, and the keen awareness of the silliness of it all that produces that special mix of irony and compassion.
What have I been doing? Careers as a Wall Street lawyer, then a merchant banker, then an arbitrageur with my own firm, then a local politician. Then I moved to Paris for a few years. I have homes in Manhattan, the East End, and Paris. I adopted two baby girls on my own who have grown into lovely young women, now 16 and 13. In between one thing and another, I keep going back to school. In addition to degrees in physics and law, I have collected an MSc in economics as I work toward a doctorate. I have traveled very widely in Europe, somewhat less in the Far East and Africa. I have a pilot's license I no longer use and am well over my driving fast cars phase in life. I ski, I do yoga with a private instructor twice a week. I am passionate about ballet and take in a range of theatre and music too. I read as much as I can when not reading for school. I particularly like history, biography, and historical fiction. I am a political affairs and public policy junky with very strong left-wing views. I like to think of myself as a traitor to my class.
Withal, there is plenty left to do and I plan not to miss any of it. Company would be nice. My girls are increasingly going their own way, as they should.
