My immediate family moved to the States when I was 5 and my sister and I grew up speaking Serbian... so when I met my long lost cousins, aunts and uncles that day,we could talk in the language that had always been like a secret code for my family. It was a homecoming and a welcoming that literally changed my life...
They were so poor... poorer than anything I'd ever seen. And there I was, a young American lawyer without any financial concerns, but they didn't want a thing from me, just to reconnect, to share a warm meal and make me feel completely at home.
After two weeks with them, I came back knowing that happiness isn't about having nice things and showing them off. It's about the people you have in your life and how they make you feel.
As for my people here in Phoenix... I have my parents and sister nearby and a massive circle of friends I wouldn't trade for the world... Well, *maybe* for a day if bribed with a giant plate of pancakes drizzling in syrup... They are my kryptonite.
