The one thing I learned from my divorce is that two people have to enjoy at least some of the same things. That’s why I’m looking for a friend as much as anything else. I want someone who enjoys spending their free time in similar ways, though with their own hobbies and interests as well. Likewise, I won’t expect anyone to make candles with me. But I do want someone who enjoys spending the occasional night playing games with the family or spending a weekend camping and hiking in the mountains, way up where they’re no cell phone service. While I enjoy playing on the internet and such, I also enjoy disconnecting from the world at times. The next vacation I plan to take will be up in the mountains, in a cabin with no neighbors in sight and lots of nature to explore. I enjoy getting together with family and friends, cooking out and especially hosting it. I love having to cook more food than I have pots for. I’m not the best cook, but I’m proud of my holiday turkey and homemade lasagna and yeast breads. I also like reading, writing, crafting, movies, and playing video games with my son. My favorite stories, either written or video, usually involve fantasy, mythology, spies, or comedy. After spending years working at jobs I didn’t like, I returned to college a couple of years ago and just finished up so I can find a job I actually want, writing and/or editing. I’d love to work for a book publisher editing manuscripts, but want to stay in the southeast, so still working on that. I also write my own novels in hopes of being published one day. That was another part of my return to college, to learn more about creative writing so I can revamp my books. I like small towns (or at least smaller) and old homes. One day I want to buy an old home and fix it up, but to live in myself, not resell. New homes always feel sterile to me, while I enjoy imaging the prior occupants of older homes, what their lives were like and who they were. I might not be able to rewire light fixtures or plumb a line, but I’ve replaced faucets, mirrors, and can paint a pretty good looking wall. I’ve been trying to grow a garden for years now, and get closer to getting fruit and vegetables each year, but still wind up killing everything. Still, I’m determined and it’s fun seeing my progress, so I keep trying. I once got a watermelon the size of a softball, so I figure they’re hope. I guess that’s enough to get started. Anymore and there won’t be anything to talk about later.
