ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

SPOILER ALERT: I do not now, nor have I ever, engaged in the practice of yoga.

(I recently read that the word "yoga" in a profile elicits a more favorable response than any other. And now I've mentioned it twice.)

Another spoiler alert is that I'm no longer a member here, so if you really want to contact me, you'll have to write to nightriderblue at a o l -- I'm real, honest. I've also listed my location as New York, NY, because I've discovered that many people apparently don't know that Whitestone, where I currently reside, is in New York City. But as a longtime former inhabitant of both the Upper West and Upper East Sides, I'm aware that New Yorkers can be as provincial as the proverbial little old lady from Dubuque. Some people haven't gone above 14th Street in twenty years. A "cosmopolitan" actually means a person who's comfortable living anywhere.

In any case, I'm a pretty damn good person, if I do say so myself. There's something fundamentally hilarious about the idea that you can go online and "order up" a soulmate the way you'd order a combination sushi platter. But here I am, along with the rest of you! So here's what's on the menu: I'm tall, widely traveled, well-read, enthusiastic, empathetic, and even exuberant when the occasion calls for it.

Anywsy, my last major trip abroad was a terrific two weeks in Vienna and its surrounding region, including the gorgeous Danube valley. My mind is still filled with images of buildings like creamy white wedding cakes, Klimt and Schiele paintings, cinematic outings at the Vienna film museum, astonishing palaces like the Hofburg and Schonbrunn, and cafes galore. What a feast for the mind and senses.

Naturally there's plenty to do in New York, my native city, where I grew up and now work in publishing as a book editor, both fiction and nonfiction. I'm also a passionate film-lover (foreign and classic, offbeat Indies, and anything by Hitchcock, Welles, Kubrick, Bunuel or Wilder, and especially New Wave French cinema and its offspring. I'm fond of browsing in bookshops, exploring museums, occasionally dancing in the rain (but singing only on request) -- and otherwise devouring as much of the feast of life while keeping a reasonably slender waistline, and mixing my metaphors with reckless abandon.

And not just cinema, but theater has always been important to me, especially plays with a certain offbeat humor; in fact, I've written one-act plays that have been performed off-off-Broadway, comedy for cable TV; I've just finished a comedy set in Jerusalem, of all places. But right this second I'd like to be having a cafe mocha with someone special sitting across from me so we can talk about all the great ideas and share all the great feelings -- and then see what magic, if any, results. As Oscar Wilde memorably said, "All of us are in the gutter -- but some of us are looking at the stars." We can share the telescope.

My "ideal" woman possesses an openness to life, experience, intimacy, combined with keen intelligence, relaxed good-humor, but an urgent curiosity to know more, do more, live more. She's not a knee-jerk leftist or knee-jerk right-winger, but both her knees are lovely and she's quite pleased that I like them. She may or may nor like "snuggling up" on that proverbial and by now tattered couch, but she definitely likes getting extremely close, listening to slow jazz or classic rock or Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique," and being both playful and serious, and sometimes downright silly. She's someone who's kind but has an ability to puncture my all-too-many illusions -- yet knows how to create a harmony that makes those illusions unnecessary. I can be deeply affected by a woman's beauty to be sure -- but that's just the beginning of the deeper of the mind and heart to follow.

Now that wasn't too sappy, was it? I knew you'd agree.
