In discussing writing this profile with an ex-girlfriend, she described me as a "shy southern gentleman". I like that statement but with a caveat. I grew up in a small southern college town. It gave me some southern values (honesty, honor, politeness), but I come from yankee parents and have the broader worldview that comes from the multi-cultural environment of a college.
This is my second attempt at Match. I find it a bit awkward. It reminds me too much of the job search interview process. For a private person, it is awkward to put so much personal information. It is tough to sort through the irregular imperfect puzzle pieces and find one that matches my irregular imperfect personality to make an ideal pair, but that's why we're here.
I am caring and thoughtful. Politically, I am a centrist; socially leaning liberal, fiscally conservative, yet practical, and am virulently anti-partisan. And I'm a bit of an NPR geek. I am scientifically minded and fancy myself something of a renaissance man. For my day job I am a Software Engineer. I have a Masters in computer geekery and abandoned a PhD when I burned out and decided I wanted a real life.
In contrast my current obsession is blowing art glass. I enjoy working the screaming hot molten mass of glass into a finished solid piece of beauty or functionality. It is quite challenging, and I’m learning a lot.
I love roots music of all sorts (Blues, Bluegrass, Roots Rock, alt-Country, Latin, African, and the unclassifiable). I pretty much abandoned the Pop music scene in the musical wasteland that was the 80s. I like to go to live music shows and to dance, in places from dive bars to upscale venues to dance halls, and music festivals, I also play blues harp, not well, at least not yet. I’m a good dancer, a solid and gentle lead, proficient at several styles.
Also, I like to cook, and am pretty good, but I don't give myself the time often enough. I garden a bit, mostly for the fresh ingredients. I am a car nut, and own a vintage British sports car. But among all my hobbies the car is loosing out in the battle for my time.
The drinking thing - I am a teetotaler, and much to my surprise this seems to be a deal-breaker for some folks. So I think it is useful to explain. I don't drink because I don't have a taste for it, not because of alcoholism or for religious reasons. I do use wine in cooking and sample occasionally. My not drinking should not prevent my date from drinking. So long as there isn't a problem, I don't have a problem. Besides I can be a convenient designated driver.
My friend noted that many of my ex-girlfriends are "spunky". I think a bit of extroversion plays well against my reserved nature. People who have to constantly be the center of attention wear thin pretty quickly. I’m looking for someone who’s intelligent, independent, caring, and willing to meet me half way.
