There was a little boy that loved to chase butterflies. He would run around all day, captivated by their delicate mystery and unpredictable, ephemeral beauty, trying to catch them as they flitted here and there. He couldn’t believe there was anything in the world more wonderful than beautiful butterflies.
As time passed he grew into a young man, yet he still was fascinated by the butterflies, but he had become more clever. Now he would adorn himself with bright colorful flowers and tempting scents, and he would walk slowly in places he knew the butterflies liked to go… and they were very attracted to his sparkling temptations and he found himself covered with more butterflies than he could count. And for a short while he was happy, surrounded by such beauty and engulfed in such attention.
But eventually the young man tired of this game, his appetites for variety quenched. He took off his colorful flowers and stopped wearing his tempting scents. He began to sit quietly and reflect on his desires and wants, and to look back on his life and his actions and what all his chasing had gotten him. As he sat in the stillness a smaller dream emerged, a dream of finding the single, unique butterfly that would be absolutely perfect for just him.
And so finally as a grown man he again set forth in his search, yet this time without all the gaudy, glittery trappings of his youth. This time he went and sat in the middle of a vast green field, he closed his eyes, he became still, and from within the depths of his heart he called forth for the perfect unique one that would make him complete.
And he sat patiently, and waited, and waited, and waited…. and one day there appeared a single, solitary butterfly coming to him from far off in the distance. It alighted on his arm and gently flexed its wings and looked up at him, the sunlight dancing on its downy rainbow wings. And the man smiled slowly and broadly, his heart welling with joy and warmth.
And he was content.
