ABOUT HIM & WHO HE'S LOOKING FOR

So I'm not really much of a fan of online dating. In this very odd world, it seems to be all about finding someone who watches the same TV shows, reads the same books, likes the same restaurants, or maybe shares some religious beliefs. But in the real world, none of that really matters much if there is no chemistry. And if there is chemistry, I could probably overlook the fact that you never miss an episode of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. In the real world, it's all about those indefinable qualities known as chemistry and charisma. It is about those things that cannot be determined by looking at photos and reading words on the page, especially when there is a pretty fair chance that those photos and words don't accurately represent the real-world person hiding behind them.

I may be wrong, but I get the feeling that a lot of people in the online dating world do not necessarily live in the real world. Some live in a world where mythical creatures known as 'perfect men' and 'perfect women' can be found if one is willing to search long enough. But such beings exist only in that ethereal realm where Bigfoot, Santa Claus and the Loch Ness Monster reside. In the real world, everyone is flawed and everyone has to stow a little baggage in the overhead compartment. I like to think that I am considerably less flawed than the average Joe and I try to pack as lightly as possible, but I'm definitely not perfect. I'm a nice guy though and I am all the things that many of the women on this site say they are looking for: intelligent, funny, affectionate, fit, honest - and possibly a little skeptical as well. This website will do that to you.

I am not here looking for the perfect woman, nor for a female version of me. I am looking for a friend and lover, someone to confide in, someone to learn from, someone to share in all the joy that life has to offer and someone to lean on when the waters get a bit choppy. And someone who doesn't take herself (or this website) too seriously. But most of all, I am looking for someone with whom I have real-world chemistry.

I have only been back in the dating pool for about 1 1/2 years after a 15 year absence, and I haven't been real impressed with how the internet has reshaped the playing field. Various people have told me how much easier it is now to find that special someone. But is it really easier? In some ways, it is too easy. Too easy, for example, for someone who is unhappy in their relationship to cast out a line hoping to reel in a replacement. Too easy for someone in a relationship that they have no intention of leaving to shop around for a little something on the side. Too easy for people to lead fantasy lives by living vicariously through fake profiles. Too easy for people who aren't really ready to date yet to 'test the waters.' Too easy for people who are institutionalized to pretend to be something they are not. But as for actually meeting someone with whom you might have a real connection and a real future? That's not an easy thing at all.

I have some space left here so I guess I'll share with you some of the all-time best emailed rejections I have received:
"I just started menopause so this isn't really a good time for me to be dating." (I had foolishly assumed that since she was, you know, on a dating site, she might be interested in going out.)
"I am living proof that homosexuality is not a choice because if I felt any attraction to women, I'd be done with men forever." (I might have caught her at a bad time.)
"I could never date a guy that I could bench-press." (Ouch!)
"You're cute, but if you're not 6'0" or taller, it's not gonna happen." (What if I put some lifts in my shoes?)
"No God, no way!" (I don't know that it's my fault that there is no god.)
And by far the most popular response, which I have received numerous variations of, this one being one of the nicer ones:
"You seem like a nice guy, but I could never date a smoker." (*Sigh*)
