ABOUT HER & WHO SHE'S LOOKING FOR

You involuntarily reveal something about yourself when describing your ideal match, no?

I would need him to be kind. Someone who is genuinely curious about the people and things around him, who values his place in the world and whose passion and particular interests inspire meaningful exchanges between people. Someone more concerned with asking questions than with giving answers. Not easily angered, but nonetheless angry--meaning someone who is aware and emotionally affected by social injustices, and who has within him a deep desire to translate that anger into an action that promotes social and interpersonal change.

Someone magnificently spontaneous, impeccably intelligent and gifted, fearlessly carefree, independent.

Someone who, on a regular basis, is humbled by beauty.

Fyodor Dostoevsky believed that there were five great questions of human existence. He called them --prokliatye voprosy--“the accursed questions.” They are:

--What is God?
--What is the nature of time?
--What is the answer to the riddle of death?
--What is evil?
--What is life?

I thought it might be fun to try answering them.

What is God?
A misspelling that stuck. What we should be asking: “What is Good?”

What is the nature of time?
Traveling can be enjoyable. We see things. We take pictures to remember them. Human beings have come up with a system to measure time, which is basically the interval between the beginning and the ending of an event. A “lifetime,” occurs between birth and death. In between those two events, other events happen. Those are at times noteworthy, often mundane. Nonetheless, they continue shaping who we are, until we no longer “are.” Death is the end of one’s time, though that word is sometimes substituted for a metaphor implying travel, i.e., “the end of the road,” or, “on one’s last legs.” Where there is no time, there can be no pictures.

What is the answer to the riddle of death?
“Shhhh…”

What is evil?
Human thought or action intended to cause unnecessary pain to another living being.

What is life?
A state of being characterized by growth, change, response, and vulnerability. For humans, it's also an understanding of how one's existence falls in relation to other existence, an understanding which in turn gives it "meaning." Meanings, however, can be challenged. Sometimes, our relationship to others is defined by trust. But then we go to school, or we run a marathon in Boston. And the definition changes. Ergo the human condition.
