In her own words

I grew up in LA, went to college up north, lived in Spain for a year, and have always traveled as much as possible (mostly in Spanish, and a few Portuguese, speaking countries, and even in the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa). I never thought that I'd (1.) move back to LA, or (2.) go back to school. But as it turned out, I did both. After college, I taught Spanish to little kids (I thought I'd love it) but I very quickly realized that I missed being in school. I went back for a master's degree in Latin American Studies, which was great -- I learned a lot and really enjoyed it -- but it didn't offer much in the way of.. well, leading to any concrete profession. So after finishing my MA in Latin American Studies, I logically moved to Kenya for the summer. Upon arriving in Nairobi, I went, resume in hand, knocking on the doors of different organizations that seemed to be doing interesting work until I happened upon one fantastic organization, which, miraculously, offered me a pretty cool job. While in Nairobi, I had the opportunity to travel a bit in East Africa and I eventually made my way back to LA.. I applied to doctoral programs in anthropology while I looked everywhere I could for a job as I waited to hear back. I was hired as a research assistant on a research project that was a perfect match with my interests and almost a year later, I began a PhD program in Anthropology... which brings me to the present! Currently, I'm working on my dissertation, teaching undergraduate classes (as a teaching assistant), and trying to finish up this whole school business (although I do still love it!). My research is with actual people (no ancient bones or anything of that sort!), and, for the most part, I love it. I also love to travel (and, when feasible, to live abroad), which bodes well for most anthropologists who typically do their fieldwork (and sometimes their dissertation writing too) in different places around the world. But I suppose I also like ironies, or, perhaps more accurately, I realized just how much I enjoy my work right here in LA! As I follow up with the same sample of immigrant-origin youth and families who have participated in this larger research project for years now, I'm able to approach many of the same topics from a longitudinal perspective, and more closely understand the lived experiences of Latin@ youth and families in LA -- over time, as dynamics change, etc., looking at similarities and differences in terms of diverse family contexts and the implications that, for example, legal status situations, can have for youth. About me: I spend most of my time working, and too much time trying to change that. I have a great family and feel very lucky that most live close-by. Running keeps me sane and hot sauce is pretty important to me.. that, and trying to make this world a little bit prettier. About you: I like people who are genuine, who enjoy the spice of life (¿perhaps spicy food as well?! though, importantly, and hopefully obviously, the first point being the most important!), people who enjoy learning (¡always!), who value good conversation, and who enjoy the art of, just hanging out, sometimes at least.. All of this said, I don't believe it's possible to know what you want, what you're truly looking for, until you find it...

I love dogs but I don't like that you get one knowing that it will likely die before you do.. ya know? I find it unnecessarily sad.. or maybe I just miss my dog.. but regardless, I do love hanging w/ other people's dogs :-).

Political views

Favorite hot spots

New restaurants, chill bars, any taco night, comedy (anywhere), México..

University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA

Funny people, doing homework, frozen cashews, and pistachios, running, How I Met Your Mother, Homeland, Scandal, the Mindy Project, romantic comedies (I can't deny it!), great TED Talks, and so many more fav things but only 7 characters remaining..

For fun

Laughing (at myself if necessary), spending time with friends, and with family, going out for drinks, staying in for drinks, cooking, exploring new places, running, painting, doing nothing (I daydream about doing nothing sometimes.. okay, often)!

Last read

News about ridiculous deportations and how so many people simply don't know even the most basic facts, which in turn leads to perpetual disagreement and is, quite sad...
