Q and A With… Anne Hathaway 2008

The star of Rachel Getting Married talks about love and loneliness.

For all its darkness about addiction, Rachel Getting Married really is a beautiful film about love. Can you comment on that?

I do think it’s a movie about love, but love has a dark side as well…I love that this movie explores that and doesn’t try to judge it or never pre-supposes that love and darkness at the exclusion at the exclusion of each other. I just think that’s life, and this movie is very open to that idea.

Your character is quite lonely, it seems.

Kim is the loneliest girl in the world. It never occurred to me that she is when I was playing her, but I realize that is what she is. And that’s very relatable with audiences I think…Her relationship with Kieran’s character isn’t so much romantic as it is a godsend, because here is someone who looks at her and actually sees her, who doesn’t see her addiction, who doesn’t see her past, who doesn’t see previous incarnations of her. He actually can see who she is at that moment and likes her.

Do you have any wedding disaster reception stories?!

No, except when I was fourteen, I decided I would be really cool and try to drink a glass of champagne, and I got sick and had to lie down!

In real life, Sidney is the very sexy musician, Tunde Adebimpe. You had great chemistry with him!

I love Tunde as a person, and his character is so beautiful and sensitive. And any guy that can walk into a family like this and stay relatively unharmed is my kind of guy!

In your previous popular film, you got to kiss the very sexy Adrian Grenier, who is also a sexy musician!

I know! And you know what’s funny, I just watched Entourage for the first time. It’s a great show. I don’t know what took me so long! Adrian told me he’s in a band, and I asked him if they had an album- -he gave it to me, they’re a really cool band. I’ve never seen them play live, but I imagine they’re a lot of fun.

Are you a good toast giver at weddings?

I’m a heartfelt toast-giver. It doesn’t mean that I’m clever and it doesn’t mean that I’m effective, but everything I do comes from the heart!
