Q and A With… Karina Smirnoff

A chat about love, dating and Mario Lopez with the Dancing With The Stars celeb.

Karina, you are one of the sexiest dancers on ABC’s Dancing With The Stars. What do you look for in a guy?

Right now, I’m working on being the best woman I can be. Then if the right guy comes along, I am there for him. But I want him to be honest and goal-oriented. I want him to know what he wants out of his life before he knows what he wants out of life with me, you know? A great family guy.

That’s a great observation. But not all women seem able to put that out there like that. Do you think that women give themselves away too much in relationships?

I think it’s our nature as women to want to take care of others, so whenever we’re in a relationship, most of the time we put that person first. Sometimes it’s a good thing, and sometimes it gets us in trouble. Sometimes, we are taken for granted!

What other dating advice can you offer to women?

If you stand on your own principles and you open the door, the right person will walk through it. The right person will find you.

And dating advice for guys?

Guys, you’re only as strong as the woman next to you. Like Napoleon said, you’re only as strong as your troops. So you want to make sure that your troops are happy!

You used to date one of your dance partners, actor/host Mario Lopez. Are you still friends with him?

I think we definitely have the utmost respect for each other and think he’s an amazing guy. We definitely left the relationship on a very friendly note.

So if it doesn’t work out, couples can still create a great friendship!

Exactly. It doesn’t pay to be uncivilized. There’s just no reason to continue the war. You concentrate on all the good memories. And we had so much fun together. We dated for two years.

So what have you learned about relationships that you can share with us?

You have to walk in to it with the utmost respect and trust. A relationship is like a baby: You develop it, you grow it, you put your heart and soul into it....and whatever you put in is what you’re going to get out of it.
