Q and A With… Julian McMahon

The Nip/Tuck star on love, dating as a single parent, and what it’s like being pegged as a player.

On F/X’s Nip/Tuck, you play the very sexy Dr. Christian Troy. Your character has definitely had more than a few sexually risqué moments! What’s the most jaw-dropping experience you’ve had on the show?!

I don’t think this show is kinky enough! I’m trying to push for that kind of stuff consistently! For example, it was scripted to do pushups in my bathing suit in the bathroom—I decided to do them on the deck naked! I just want to push things further!

You know, some of the extraordinary surgeries, I think, were pretty more outrageous, like the separation of the twins for example—that was probably more jaw-dropping than anything else for me.

What’s a crazy thing you’ve done for love!?

I was very young, dating a girl who was a punk rocker, with a pierced nose and weird dyed hair. I thought she was so cool! She was so different than me. Anything she had, I had to have. And since she was obsessed with the band Nazareth, I immediately had to buy their Love Hurts album. You do silly things like that when you’re in love!

Is it harder to date as a single parent?

I don’t think it’s harder, I just think you have to be more cautious the way you go about things. When you have children, they are always the first thing on your mind, no matter what you are thinking about—job, relationships, etc.

Would you ever want your character to settle down?!

No, never, that would be boring!

So when you do try to date someone, do women accuse you of being a player because of your character?!

Yes, that’s the problem with playing a role like this! You are encumbered with that kind of persona. I have had moments in my life where I have been a bit of player but that’s about it! The rest of the time, I am pretty conservative.

With such a busy schedule, how do you relax?!

I become a player!
