Q and A With… Katherine Heigl
The 27 Dresses star on the surprising way she found love, being lovey-dovey—and what really seals a relationship.
In 27 Dresses, you play Jane, an idealizing woman who always is a fixture at weddings, but lost when it comes to her own happy ending. Know anyone who is as wedding-obsessed as your character?!
In the film, your younger sister (played by Malin Ackerman) captures the heart of your boss (George, played by Ed Burns)—with whom you are secretly in love! Have you ever had an unrequited love situation, like your character does?
I haven’t really, thankfully!
You’re lucky! Then I have to ask, any tips on how single people can go from the bridal party to being the bride/groom?!
Hmmm. I met Josh (her husband, musician Josh Kelley) when I wasn’t looking. I know it’s such a cliché thing to say and it doesn’t really help that much, because what does that even mean?! But I sorta gave up on the idea of marriage and family; I had a relationship that ended, I was really disappointed, I had all these high hopes for it, and just went, screw it, I don’t need a man to have happiness.
So I gave up the whole concept and knew that if I wanted, I could have a family of my own. Then boom, I meet this guy that I can’t imagine living without. So I think the more you want it, the more you are looking for it, the more you sorta repel it for whatever reason, I don’t know why. But if you kinda create this sorta vacuum, and let life take its course, you tend to free yourself up for the unexpected.
Of the 27 bridesmaid dresses you wore in this movie, which was your favorite?
My favorite bridesmaid dress from the film was the Gone With the Wind dress. I just really liked it. I felt very Scarlett O’Hara which was fun for me! But there were a lot I didn’t like! Lots and lots!
Did you want a wedding like the one you have in this film?
No, I had a smaller wedding and it was a Christmas wedding, so it’s a totally different vibe. What’s great about it is that I got to have the best of both worlds—I got the fantasy-land beach wedding, which was beautiful and wonderful, and then my own holiday wedding!
What do you think is the secret to a great relationship?
Laughter and communication; that’s what really works for Josh and me.
How romantic are you?
Generally speaking, I shy away from being too lovey-dovey and don’t make big grand gestures. I don’t know why; I probably have issues I need to address! Josh’s biggest complaint is when we’re talking, and he’s on tour, and I’m like (feigns coolness), “Yeah, I love you too.” I’m not going to be like (gushes), “I miss you so much! I love you!” It’s just not my thing! But I definitely try, especially on special occasions, or even spontaneously, to do something really special for him. That could be as simple as making dinner or tickling his back.
How confusing was it to have your love interests in both ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and 27 Dresses be named George?!
It’s really funny because the director said to me, five weeks into the filming, “Maybe we should change George’s name because this whole season, Izzy and George (actor T.R. Knight) are trying to be together on Grey’s?!” But I said, if it were T.R. playing this role, then I would say, “Yeah, change the name.” But since it’s not, we can work with it!
