Dating Under The Influence

Dating is stressful! Some singles use cocktails as a crutch to take the edge off dating performance anxiety. Here, three reasons this is a bad idea!

By Randy B. Hecht

ating is a stressful business. You want to look great, say charming and witty things and impress your date with an extraordinary combination of brilliance and raw sex appeal. With that kind of self-induced pressure plaguing a simple night at the movies, some singles use cocktails as a crutch to take the edge off dating performance anxiety.

The trouble is, they take the edge off that brilliance and raw sex appeal in the process… and ruin their chances of making a good impression. Worse

than that, dating under the influence can be downright dangerous. Consider these five reasons that dating and drinking don’t mix:

1. I did what?
The price of a few hours of uninhibited hijinks maybe be days (or more) of stark embarrassment for having behaved like a complete ass. Suddenly a relationship that seemed to have great potential isn’t going to last—but you can bet the impression you made will.

2. There go the insurance rates
The same rule applies on date and non-date nights: If you get wrecked, your car could get totalled. Of course, the nice police officers who come to help you at the accident scene will be happy to take you somewhere to sleep it off. Don’t count on your date to spring for bail.

3. What was your name again?
Dating is a process of getting to know people better, and for that you need to keep your wits about you. At the very least, you have to remember something about what attracted you to your date—and try to avoid

asking all the same questions on your next night out that you asked last time.

4. Everyone isn’t as nice as you
Most dates make for great stories you’ll laugh about some day. But there’s always the chance you could run into someone who isn’t above taking advantage of you. Staying sober is your best defense against having an experience that isn’t so funny.

5. What are you going to do, stay drunk forever?
Maybe you think you’re more intoxicating when you’re intoxicated. But you have to sober up sometime. At some point your date will have to get acquainted with — and take a shine to — the unaltered you. And anyone who likes you only when you’re drunk or stoned is someone you shouldn’t be dating.

Now that you’ve pondered these sobering thoughts, think about making your next dating move with a clear head.
