15 Ways To Start Your First Email

Feeling tongue-tied while trying to compose that first email? Try these 15 ways to get you started!

By Linda Rains

t’s the moment of truth. You’ve spotted the perfect profile, and you’re ready to make contact. You open up the email, address the message, choose a flirty subject line and... then what? Your creative juices have all gone dry. Your mind is blank. You’re staring at an empty message, and you’ve got nowhere to go.

Au contraire; you’ve only just begun. Remember, we’re all here to meet and learn more about each other. So what’s your best first move?

First, keep the tone light and friendly. By all means, stay away from canned messages (read: Copying and pasting the same note to several people). Instead, get personal by focusing on what that person has written in their profile. Something there caught your interest, mention it and use their words as subtle cues to get started.

Still having trouble? Delve into questions about interests, goals, activities and any key points that may have struck you in the profile. All it takes is a little honest interest in the person at the other end of the keyboard. Start by introducing yourself, and then jump into questions like:

  1. What do you like to do for fun?
  2. How do you spend your 9 to 5?
  3. What is your ideal career choice?
  4. Do you have any hobbies?
  5. Do you like to travel?
  6. What is your favorite food or restaurant?
  7. What is your favorite book or author?
  8. What’s your favorite vacation spot?
  9. Are you a “dog” or “cat” person?
  10. Are you a sports fan?
  11. What would you do if you won the lottery?
  12. What is your favorite style of music?
  13. How do you feel about dancing?
  14. What magazine is on your coffee table right now?
  15. What five people would you invite to dinner?
The most important key? Remember to have fun! Just be sure to keep it light and nowhere near the third degree. The goal is to find shared interests, and activities you have in common. Once you find those important key points, conversation should flow freely!
