n the last installment of Happen’s dating diary, Maggie went on her first date since her big breakup with her ex, D. After spending the evening fending off gorgeous Ivan’s not-so-welcome advances, she was ready to write him off, but then he emailed her an apology and asked for a second chance. Will she give it to him? Read on to find out.

Just had dinner with Robbie. He’s so great. Smart, cute, fun. And gay. Ah, well. We always joke about how if he were straight, we’d have gotten hitched already and had a bunch of impeccably dressed kids. In any case, he wanted to know what was going on

with Ivan. Since our first disaster of a date where he literally begged me to sleep with him (ew), Ivan, it seems, has turned a new leaf. He’s been very attentive with the texts and emails and acting like a perfect gentleman. I guess he’s making up for last time. I’m not convinced yet that I want to see him again, but Robbie thinks I should. “He’s great on paper, Maggie,” he reminded me. That’s for sure. But I have to deal with the real guy, not his stats…

Uh-oh. I just got an email from my ex D. Basically, it was a “Hello, how are you, thinking about you” thing. Typical. Just when I think I’m starting to feel better about everything, like I’m getting over him and moving on, he throws me for a loop by getting in touch again. I didn’t respond yet. Robbie thinks I should block him from all emails and IMs, but I can’t seem to do it. D. was “the guy”. The first one I pictured settling down with. Now I don’t know what to do. Did he get in touch because he misses me? Does he want to get back together? Is he as miserable as I’ve been? Aaahhhhh!!!

we could meet up. Once again, he suggested a place that’s conveniently located in his hood, which makes me wonder if he’s gonna try to lure back up to his apartment and morph back into an octopus. Still, he has been awfully nice lately, and he’s proving to be a very effective distraction from D., whom I’ve resisted writing back to yet. Good for me. But how much longer can I hold out?

Saturday, 12:05 p.m.
The party at the hotel was so much fun! Sylvie had invited some of her other girlfriends, so there were six of us who went together. The party started off slow — boys on one side, girls on the other — so I thought we should liven things up a bit and I challenged all the girls to a champagne contest. We had to get as many men as possible to buy us champagne. Double points if someone bought you and one of the other girls a glass. The great thing was, it forced all of us to talk to as many people as possible. We quickly learned that if a guy didn’t offer you a drink within the first five minutes, he was never going to. So you had to know when to cut your losses. But I finally won when a couple of finance dudes in suits grabbed me and offered to buy me — and all my friends — a round. Meanwhile Ivan had also left me a message, saying he was going to bed but that he wants to see me soon. I was one hot commodity tonight!

But — and this is one big but — after I got home, I couldn’t help myself and I drunk-emailed D! It was the usual, cringe-worthy, tragically romantic stuff I write when I’m tipsy and missing someone. I’m so mad at myself! D. probably thinks he can just snap his fingers and I’ll jump—and I’m certainly not disabusing him of that notion. I’m sure he’s feeling so smug that I wrote him back already. Ugh. When am I going to be able to move on from all this? Or was his text to me a way of saying what I’ve dreamed of hearing for months: that he wants to get back together?
