Survey - Love At First Sight

Love at First Sight

By Dawn Yanek

Do you believe in love at first sight? Or does it take a while for that feeling to kick in? We asked and almost 50,000 of you answered. Read on for the full story.

e've all gushed over the romantic notion: You see a hottie across the room, your eyes meet and, instantly, you know you've found your soul mate. Love at first sight sounds wonderful, but most of you think it's more of a fairy tale than a fact of life. According to our recent Match.com poll of 48,500 people, only 11 percent of respondents have ever been truly smitten within seconds—and a whopping 46 percent say they only know it's love after a few months, if not longer. All of this caution makes us wonder: Are we getting cynical... or smart?

Probably more smart than cynical. Says Dennis Lowe, Ph.D., a psychology professor at Pepperdine University who specializes in long-term-relationship issues, "There is more of a realization that it may not be love at first sight as much as lust at first sight," and that falling too fast may not end well. "Studies show that the longer people know each other before they enter into a committed relationship, the better the chances are for success," Lowe explains. "In fact, some of the best relationships I've seen are between people who didn't really like each other at first. After they got to know each other and worked through some issues, their relationship became stronger." So, next time you're out with someone nice but don't foresee any fireworks going off, remember that patience may well lead to long-term passion.

Dawn Yanek, author of the book Women's Best-Kept Secrets, didn't try to hurry love: She and her guy dated for nine years before tying the knot.
