Q and A With… Harry Connick, Jr

The star of New In Town talks about love, balance and what makes a woman sexy.

In New In Town, you had great chemistry with your costar, Renee Zellweger!

She’s definitely unique. I’ve never met anyone quite like her. It’s her combination of intelligence and humor and talent that really—it’s hard to say exactly what makes her different. But clearly, I’m in agreement with millions of people, because there’s a reason she’s such a big movie star, you know? We have the exact same sense of humor. From the minute we met, I said, “This is going to be a breeze. It’s gonna be easy!”

It was so much fun to watch the courtship in this film. What drew you to your own wife, and what traits does she possess that you are still in awe of after all these years?

My wife is like my character in this movie. She’s very strong—very observant. Very much the rock of the family. And that’s very attractive to me. Coupled with her intelligence and that I find her very beautiful—it doesn’t get much better than that. So I think she has things that I’ll never have, and vice-versa, and we sort of fill each other’s gaps in a way.

How do you balance each other out?

We just are. We have different ways of looking at things. She’ll say, “What city are you going to tomorrow?” And I’ll say, “I don’t know!” And she’s like, “How could you not know what city you’re going to?” I just don’t know...!

She can’t fathom that—she just doesn’t understand that. And we seem to have found a place where we just understand each other’s differences and similarities. It’s just a good match.

What do you most admire about women?

I think intelligence would be number one. That’s a big turn-on to me. Somebody who’s smart and always kind of struggling with a quest for something, some kind of knowledge or philosophy… That would probably be number one, I think!

Do you think women get sexier when they mature?

Oh, absolutely sure. It’s a different kind of sexy. My wife, I think about her when she was 25, she was a 25-year-old sexy woman; now she’s almost 45, and she’s sexy in a completely different way. It’s very internal, I think, what sexy is.

Do you and your wife have the same taste in movies?

She probably favors romantic comedies a little more than me. I like horror movies, scary movies. Thrillers and stuff like that!

Are you romantic yourself?

I think so. You’d have to ask my wife! But I think to a degree I am.

In the movie, you have a daughter, but you’re not very good at handling her dating! What romantic advice would you give to your own daughters?

I try to be there for them and to lead by example, and I try to hold off on the advice until they ask for it. I don’t want to push them away too much! You know that if you raise them right, they’re going to pick the right guy. So I trust them.

What are your thoughts on women who think they have to be thin to be sexy?

It’s absolutely ludicrous. Just silliness. At this point, I think women should know that it doesn’t matter. I’ve known plenty of big girls that were real sexy. You know what I’m saying? It’s got nothing to do with that. I grew up in New Orleans. A skinny girl is funny down there! We like meat on our bones down there!

People once voted you Best Dressed. How important is it to you that a woman dresses well?

It doesn’t make a difference. If People saw the way I dress most of the time, they wouldn’t have voted me that!

Is there something endearing about a woman in sweats with no makeup?

I love it. It’s my favorite.
