Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection." - Simon Pegg

In his own words

I've changed this profile about five times. The thought of covering my awesomeness in 4000 words fills me with anxiety...and I'm not even that awesome. Take what you will of this information: 1- I currently attempt to teach English literature and writing. I say attempt because it often feels like I'm just talking to myself like some wandering madman. It's not their fault; they just had the misfortune of being subjected to my random musings on geek culture. I love teaching because it requires me to keeping learning new things. Also, teachers roll in the dough :) 2- I used to work as a floor entertainer at a jungle-themed family restaurant, where I dressed as a talking monkey, a tribal medicine man, an Indiana Jones tour guide, and a supervillain called Taco Man, among many others. It instilled in me a willingness to make an ass of myself on a regular basis for the entertainment of others, something I often display at karaoke. In fact, I recently gave myself a slight case of whiplash rocking out to "I Believe in a Thing Called Love." What can I say? I'm a people-pleaser and you have to give the crowd what they want. 3- I love to read and write pieces that are rather sardonic in nature. In fact, I'm currently working on a piece where a man finds Jesus working at a massage parlor. I don't think it's unrealistic. We're an extremely tense race. If the son of God returns, his greatest gift would be laying his hands upon stressed muscles. 4- I can have conversations about movies and comic books all day, but I also like to mix it up and talk about more serious matters. For example, is it just me or did Twinkies get smaller after their triumphant return? I really don't feel like enough people are talking about this issue. 5- If there is a heaven, I'm sure it resembles Disneyland. I often imagine St. Peter handing out churros and Mickey ears at the pearly gates. 6- As an English teacher, I'm often stuck in the office reading papers during work hours, so I love to be active in my time off. While it's nice to chill out to a nice book or a great movie, I also feel like the world is too big to not explore. I'm new to Las Vegas and I only feel like I've just cracked it's shell and glimpsed it's gooey, complicated insides (it's a strange description, I know, but I won't apologize). 7- I try to not take life too seriously. That doesn't mean I won't take you seriously, though. I would rather listen to you talk than to PARTY. As I say, I'm new to Vegas, so even if something significant doesn't get moving, it would still be nice to have a drinking buddy or fellow explorer. I'm rather anxious to get out and meet new people. Concerning my partner, I'm looking for somebody who never uses the phrase "Everything happens for a reason." I have to get that out of the way. They should enjoy movies, especially a bad science fiction/horror film, and be willing to MSTK 3000 it with me (hopefully, you know what that means). I would love to be with an adventurous person: you know, hunting down a quirky local landmark or willing to occasionally search for the Ark of the Covenant, just your standard weekend. They should also appreciate my geeky side. You don't have to engage in said geekiness, but you need to accept that I've actually written academic papers on zombies, Battlestar Galactica, and found footage horror films. But I also look for somebody who can talk about other non-geek-related topics. I have a wide range of interests and I'm always willing to open up to new ideas. In addition, this person should be actively looking to grow as an individual. I don't want to change you, nor am I looking to judge, but I always like people who seek out new experiences and ideas that allow them to develop as human beings. Wow. I really didn't mean to end on such a deep thought. I'll rectify that by saying that "The Big Lebowski" helped to frame my personal ideology. especially my belief that a good rug can really bring a room together. Hope to hear from you.

Favorite hot spots

I'm new to Las Vegas, so it's difficult for me to pin down favorite local hot spots. So far, I've enjoyed the delicacies of Pinkbox Donuts and Babystacks Cafe, and the geeky joys at the Pinball Hall of Fame, Alternate Reality and Maximum Comics.

Utah State University, Logan, UT

Favorite things

Sushi, mexican food, bad horror films, Chuck Pahlaniuk, "Fahrenheit 451," "The Big Lebowski," Spielberg, "Breaking Bad," "The Newsroom," "Modern Family," "Justified," "Game of Thrones," "Archer," "Battlestar Galactica" (this limited space sucks!)

For fun

Reading, writing, cooking, movie-going, exercising, karaoke, exploring new restaurants, finding quirky local hotspots, people-watching, finding new hobbies, avoiding werewolves.

Last read

I recently read "The Science of Fear" by Howard Gardner, which addressed why we live in such a fear-based culture. It was fascinating and led to my hypothesis that Americans are becoming more anxious as they become more attached to technology/news.
