In his own words

My family had a humble start in the US: my parents immigrated to the projects in Queens, NY with 6 dollars, no play to stay, and broken English, intent on starting their medical training. I never imagined I’d follow in my father's footsteps and become a physician. Despite being born and raised in the deep South, I spent my undergraduate years in NYC passionate about cinema, particularly documentaries about global health and human rights abuses. For several summers, I worked in underserved villages across rural Latin America with a public health NGO to get a more real-world understanding of these issues; this ultimately led me to medical school. I recently finished my residency in Emergency Medicine in inner-city Philadelphia, and prior to this I completed my Masters in Public Health in London. My speciality is my passion – particularly treating children and helping people that come to the ER that are truly sick – from the wealthy to the poorest of the poor. Doctors Without Borders is an organization I believe in strongly and want to work alongside in the near future. My parents went from Queens to a rural town buried deep in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, and finally settled in TX (my Dad, a GI specialist, had a completely random encounter saving Elizabeth Taylor's life while in WV while she was choking on a chicken bone, which opened up a job opportunity in TX, long story...). I just moved back to Houston in June, 2014 after almost a decade away. Moving back home has always been a dream of mine, both to be close to my family and serve the community. I'm currently working at a busy community ER on the outskirts of Houston, and serving on faculty at the Baylor College of Medicine, where I treat mostly uninsured county patients at the Ben Taub General ER and teach the housestaff. I’m passionate about medicine, but also have countless interests outside of the hospital. During my time off before medical school, I backpacked across Central and South America, played violin with an orchestra, and worked at a foreign-policy think-tank in Manhattan analyzing bio-terrorist threats. Family is also important to me: I have two older sisters – one a Pediatrician, the other an attorney - both of whom I’m very close to. I was raised in a part of Texas with deep values, cowboy boots, and old-fashioned southern hospitality, where people were truly genuine, good to each other, selfless, and knew how to manage challenges in life with grace; hopefully looking to meet someone with similar qualities. I'm definitely a believer in friends first, and seeing where it goes from there.
