In her own words

As a mother and a teacher, I understand I'm constantly modeling behaviors I hope to instill in the impressionable. To me, the most essential are honesty, hard work, open-mindedness, confidence without arrogance, and responsibility. So, needless to say, I rarely do tequila shots at work. I hope you've gathered, I don't take myself too seriously. Laughing is paramount and a clever sense of humor intrigues me beyond articulation. (I have a bizarre crush on Louis CK that I can neither ignore yet comprehend.) Honesty is fundamental in all types of relationships. However, is it just me, or does it seem, lately, people have mistaken brazen rudeness for it? Social networking seems to be a popular forum, probably because most lack the spine to actually speak any of what they write. But I won't subscribe to mean-spirited drivel under the guise of "being honest." Honesty is not the enemy of kindness. I grew up learning a good work ethic shows character. "Anything you do is worth doing well." My dad said this every Saturday morning as I lumbered around the yard picking weeds and, undoubtedly, "cursing" under my breath. (I though fart was a curse word until I was eleven.) All I wanted was to sit on the couch in my pajamas while slurping down a soggy bowl of Cap'n Crunch and watch Gargamel and Azreal try unsuccessfully, yet again, to find the Smurf village. Was that too much to ask? But as I got older, I found that I had been employing that value, hard work, for years without knowing it. And being the ultimate optimist, I also believe, wholeheartedly, I can do anything I attempt well. (Ok, I believe I can do it awesomely well, but that's just because I'm freakishly strong for my size.) And when I say, "ultimate optimist" I don't mean the creepy, rainbows and unicorns kind of optimism, although my sticker collection from 1983 would suggest otherwise. I mean, if there are only six seconds left on the clock and my team is on our own 22 yard line and our starting QB is out with a sprained such-and-such and our back-up is weak in the pocket and has no real-game experience, I will still believe in, and more importantly, shout vehemently at the television, "HAIL MARY!" It could happen. Flutie did it. And now every time BC plays Miami we have to see it over and over that whole week long. There ARE other games on, you know, Chris, Kirk, Desmond and Coach! But I digress. Open-mindedness means you don't think you know everything. That's one of the few things I'm absolutely sure of...that I don't know everything...and that no one likes a know-it-all. They're douchey. Can I say that? Confidence without arrogance. It's that simple. If you are truly confident, arrogance is unnecessary, and quite frankly, counter-productive. Being confident in who you are and what you have to offer is concrete, and sexy as hell. Pretense is as transparent as a white tank-top in a wet T-shirt contest, but much less attractive. (You're my boy, Blue!) Lastly, I think responsibility is something a lot of people have forgotten how to define. Sure, it takes a lot less effort to be a victim, but it pickpockets your strength as a self-sufficient, able-bodied, cognitive being. And sometimes I just want to say, "Lady, coffee is hot. Use common sense and a cup holder. Don't sue a perfectly good fast-food chain whose Oreo McFlurries are a little slice of heaven in my belly." I know I tend to be verbose. I can't avoid it. I'm an English teacher. That being said, I look forward to talking to people who are like minded, and perhaps, significantly less winded, or not. P.S. I like all food except black licorice, however, my students and I are conducting an experiment to see if I can convince myself to like it by believing in my mind that I like it. Sorta like a placebo drug working on the unsuspecting patient. It still tastes like feet to me, but we'll see.
